… Anguished mother cries out for justice

By Evelyn Usman

A 20-foot container fell from a moving truck in Ilasa, along the Oshodi-Apapa highway, landing on a commuter bus.

Eight passengers, including two staff members of the Nigerian Federal Airport Authority, FAAN, were killed, while others who managed to jump off the bus suffered varying degrees of injury.

The destroyed bodies of the victims were removed after lifting the container.

The identities of the FAAN staff were: Ajoku Chidinma, 27, a graduate of Babcock University, Ogun State and a Chima. They had closed work last Sunday and were headed home when the unexpected happened.

Chidinma’s late, distraught mother, just beginning with her husband’s death, could not be comforted, as she described her daughter’s death as devastating.

In an interview with her, she explained that “we were told that the driver of the commercial bus my daughter and her colleague were in, stopped to pick up or drop off passengers at the Ilasa bus stop when a reckless tow driver fell to high speed”. the bus.

Meanwhile, he hoped she would come home. I dialed his number, with no answer. I called her aunt with whom she stayed in Surulere. The two of us didn’t sleep until 6 in the morning when a colleague of his called me to tell me that they were involved in an accident and that they were at the Isolo General Hospital. When we got there, we were told that they were not among those brought. We were referred to the government hospital, Yaba. When we got there, we were told to go check the morgue. My friend’s husband and children went to check the morgue, only to find my daughter and the bodies of her colleagues.

“This incident of a container falling on vehicles is getting too much. These container drivers continue to kill people and nobody talks.

“My daughter was only 27 years old and had plans to travel abroad to obtain her Master’s Degree in the near future, only for the promising girl and her colleague to fade away.

“I appeal to the authority in question to bring these people to book. The government should do something because too much is being done, especially in Lagos. I remember there was a time when these trucks were practically off the road during the day and were only allowed to navigate at night. Now they are everywhere, driving recklessly. I don’t know what they drink while driving, causing them to fall into cars. There were several similar cases that occurred and nothing was done to do justice to the victims.

“But my daughter’s cannot go on like this. If my daughter’s case is used to stop this unjustified murder, then that is what I have accomplished. I know they will say that I am a nobody. But I think that everyone in Lagos, Whether they have a car or not, our lives are in danger because we encounter these trailers and containers every day because they are so reckless. We should stand up for this course together. We should not wait until more people are killed. “

At this point, she began to cry again as supporters tried to comfort her.

Continuing, she said, “I sent a cousin to the Ilasa police station and the police said they could not locate the owner of the truck. We were told that the driver and the driver took off with the details of the truck. Again we were told that the The truck’s owner called to say he was coming. But nothing has been heard so far. All I demand is justice for my late laugh. Chidinma was my first daughter. “
