SPORADIC shots tore through the air in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, as political thugs engaged in a bloody confrontation that left three people with serious gunshot wounds.

Soldiers, mobile detectives and other security agents were deployed to the conflict scene to restore peace.

Dozens were also injured when thugs sympathetic to the two main political parties, the Congress of All Progressives, APC, and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, took part in a bloody standoff at the Ijomu / Oba-Nla crossings in the metropolis of Akure. .

Residents of Obanla in Akure, the capital of Ondo state, ran for the safety weekend as political thugs went berserk by sporadically shooting at each other in broad daylight.

The bloody confrontation comes just five days before the elections for governor in the state

It is the third time that thugs linked to both sides have blocked bloody attacks.

Speaking on the matter, a witness claimed that PDP supporters were the first to attack rival APC supporters on Saturday night at Obanla Junction, Oba Adesida Road in the metropolis.

Main streets were quickly deserted as tension mounted Saturday night.

In a retaliatory attack, APC supporters allegedly mobilized some 55 thugs to attack their PDP counterparts.

A source said police detectives deployed to the scene withdrew after sophisticated weapons displayed by the thugs.

The scene of the violent events is located a few meters from a division police station in Akure.

Those who were heading to the church were forced to retreat to avoid being hit by the stray bullets.

Akeredolu Campaign Organization spokesperson Richard Olabode Olatunde said in a statement: “The Akeredolu / Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organization is shocked by this latest reign of violence, in which some PPD leaders, in a blatant display of Evil and barbarism, they oversaw attacks on APC members and supporters at the Obanla crossing in the metropolis of Akure.

“We observe that the Oba-Nla crossing is the political base of some leaders of the PDP. Therefore, the origin of this latest wave of violence and violence should not be far-fetched.

“We know that the popularity of the APC candidate, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has become a source of concern for the PDP. But instead of seeking legitimate means to shore up support, the party is hell-bent on decimating the overwhelming and massive support the APC is enjoying across the state, ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial election.

“It is regrettable that the PDP continues to advance down this path of perdition despite various appeals. Our task to the security agents is to prevent the party from turning our beloved state into a theater of war in the name of the election, it is enough and it will remain. This is to underscore our determination not to seek self-help as we move slowly toward Election Day. “

In response, PDP gubernatorial candidate Eyitayo Jegede said in a statement: “Akure stayed awake last night and has continued until Sunday as the APC led a battalion of thugs causing chaos in Akure.

“PDP supporters were attacked in their homes with gunfire throughout the city, including the pass from Bye, Isolo, Obanla, Okeijebu to Agbogbo and the Express-way, among others. An eyewitness reported that a sight shooting mission is taking place when Opomulero’s office in Bye-pass, Akure, was rudely invaded.

“The thugs who arrived at the scene around 7:30 pm were fully armed with sophisticated ammunition and shots rained sporadically in the office complex where many were reported to have suffered varying degrees of injuries. They are now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

“We believe this is a deliberate attack given that Akure South LGA is a stronghold of Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, and aims to create great voter apathy among the determined electorate, creating fear of putting their lives in danger if they go out to vote. Saturday.

“Unprovoked attacks have intensified in recent weeks and APC thugs in the absence of arrests or intervention by law enforcement.”

The PDP urged President Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, CP, DSS, and other security agencies to urgently stop the situation which, according to them, resulted in several deaths and unnecessary destruction of property.
