The Bayelsa Police Command said Monday that four members of rival cult groups were killed in a shooting during a wake in the early hours of Monday.

Asinim Butswat, a police superintendent and spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command who confirmed the incident to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), added that normality has since been restored following swift intervention by the nearby Oporoma Division.

“Two rival cult gangs clashed in the community of Lobia, South Ijaw local government area on December 28, 2020 at approximately 02:30 am.

“The unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of four cultists. Their identities have yet to be determined at this time.

“The bodies have been deposited in the morgue. Investigations have started, ”Butswat said.

But a community source who witnessed the incident said a young child struck by a stray bullet was also one of the victims of the shooting.

The source who did not want to be identified for fear of being victimized said that the event was attended by gangs from the communities of Ukubie and Azuzuama, who lost three and one respectively while the child came from Lobia 1 all the neighboring coastal settlements.
