A 16-year-old boy may have played a key role in the unprecedented hack that caused chaos on Twitter in July, says a new report.

Authorities believe the Massachusetts teenager helped execute some of the most complex pieces of the July 15 attack that took over the Twitter accounts of Kanye West, Elon Musk and several other high-profile figures, the New reported Tuesday. York Times.

The young hacker worked with 17-year-old Graham Clark, the alleged mastermind of the attack, in May to trick Twitter employees into giving them login information that helped them carry out the attack, according to the newspaper. . The Times did not name the teenager because he is very young and has not been charged.

An FBI spokesman told the Times that the feds executed a search warrant Tuesday at the Massachusetts home where the boy and his parents live. Bay State authorities will likely handle the case if arrested because they are better able than the feds to charge minors as adults, the newspaper reported.

The FBI’s Boston office declined to comment Wednesday morning, and the office’s national headquarters did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Twitter declined to comment.

Authorities have charged Clark and two other people, Mason Sheppard of the United Kingdom and Nima Fazeli of Orlando, Florida, for their alleged roles in the attack, which forced Twitter to block the publication of verified users while it investigated what happened.
