No fewer than six people were confirmed dead in an accident early Tuesday that involved three vehicles around Ajede Ogbere between Ijebu Ode-Ore, on the Sagamu-Benin highway.

The Commander of the Ogun State Sector, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The sector commander said the accident involved a Mazda bus marked JJJ 862 XV, a Toyota Sienna with registration number KRD 306 BJ and a Mercedes Benz (luxury bus) marked AGL 05 XZ.

Umar noted that the accident occurred at 12:01 am and was caused by improper overtaking, excessive speed and loss of control by the driver of the luxury bus.

He added that a total of 39 people were involved in the accident, comprising 25 adult men and 14 adult women, six people were recorded dead (five men and one woman).

“The suspected causes of the multiple crash were improper overtaking and excessive speed by the driver of the luxury bus, causing a loss of control.

“The luxury bus collided with the arriving Sienna car and the Mazda bus.

“Immediately, the driver escaped because all the occupants of the Sienna vehicle were killed, while those of the Mazda bus were injured,” he said.

Umar said that the deceased were deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, and said that four people were injured and taken to the same hospital for medical attention.

The FRSC chief described the accident as an avoidable act and advised motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous driving, and also obey traffic rules and regulations.

The sector commander took pity on the families of the victims and ordered them to contact the FRSC command in Ogbere to obtain details of the accident and to claim the properties of the victims recovered from the scene of the accident.
