Officers from the Nigerian Police Ogun State Command arrested a 23-year-old man, Dansu Asogba, for allegedly killing his 60-year-old aunt, Iyabo Dansu, on August 22, 2020.
The suspect, according to a statement from the spokesman for the state command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, was arrested after a report of two sons of the deceased who presented themselves at the headquarters of the Ipokia Division.
The children said, “They received information on August 22, 2020 about the death of their mother that was not known to have any illness.”
They further stated that since they did not suspect any dirty acts, they decided to bury her without necessarily informing the police.
But immediately after the burial, they heard a report that the suspect who is the deceased’s nephew was seen at his home that fateful day, and shortly after he left, the woman was pronounced dead.
This aroused the suspicion of the people of the community and they threatened to perform a traditional ritual that will expose the murderer.
Upon learning of the community’s intention to go spiritual about the deceased’s death, the suspect Dansu Asogba came out and confessed to being responsible for the woman’s death.
Following his confession, the DPO Ipokia Division, SP Adebayo Hakeem, detailed to his detectives at the scene where the suspect was immediately arrested.
The statement added that, “during interrogation, he admitted to having killed the deceased, but affirmed that he did so because he believed that the deceased was responsible for the death of his first child and the subsequent spontaneous abortion suffered by his wife.”
“He further confessed that it was with an iron bar that he used to hit the woman on the neck and that it resulted in her death.”
Meanwhile, State Police Commissioner Edward Awolowo Ajogun ordered the suspect’s immediate transfer to the homicide section of the state’s criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and prosecution.
