The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of “illegally” canceling more than 50,000 of the votes it polled in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State.

The APC agent, at the state collection center in Yenagoa, made the allegation after INEC declared the PDP candidate, Douye Diri, who is the current governor of the state.

He insisted that the APC won in Southern Ijaw, considered a traditional stronghold of the party, contrary to INEC’s declaration of the PDP as the winner of the area.

Diri polled 24,685 votes, while APC candidate Timipre Sylva polled 18,174 votes, according to official results declared by INEC.

The LP candidate obtained 119 votes.

Rejection

“I want to protest vehemently because in Southern Ijaw, more than 50,000 APC votes were deliberately cancelled, for reasons best known to the collation officials,” said the APC agent at the state collation centre, in response to the statement. that Diri won the elections. local government area.

“The results we have from the (polling) units show that the APC got more than 70,000 votes in Southern Ijaw.

“In this INEC office here, these votes were canceled without any valid reason. They have no powers to cancel those results,” the APC agent added.

“Thank you sir, we have taken note,” responded Faruq Kuta, professor and vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and state returning officer for the elections.

The agent of another party, the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) also protested against the election results in Southern Ijaw. He accused INEC of “granting” votes to the various political parties that participated in the elections.

“I am from Southern Ijaw, from Ward 10, Unit 21. I went home to vote and my vote was counted. And there other supporters and members of our party voted, our agent signed and collected the result they gave him.

“I think this (vote) award is getting funny. The NNPP is not a small party, nor are the other parties. I was not even considered to receive the vote I cast myself.

“Here they gave me zero, what happened to my own vote?” the man said with apparent anger.

But the PPD agent at the collection center denied the allegations and insisted the election was credible.

With the Southern Ijaw result, Diri has the highest number of votes cast during the election and will soon be announced as the governor-elect of Bayelsa State.
