The All Progressive Congress Alliance for Good Governance (APCAGG) has asked Nigerians to support the appointment of Ms Lauretta Onochie as chair of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

APCAAG members made the call while briefing journalists in Abuja on Friday, saying that those who were against Onochie’s appointment were people who undermined the democratic process and the rule of law.

Great Jonathan, the group’s coordinator, said Onochie’s appointment could be disputed or viewed as partisan since “she is not a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).”

Jonathan said Onochie was only serving as a media / technical assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari and “has the power to appoint qualified people to his cabinet.”

“Some elements, who fear his shadows and his dangerous past, take up arms against the deserved appointment of Lauretta Onocihie by President Buhari, for what he stands for.

Those who fear being confronted in their notorious voter fraud schemes by Onochie’s bold and courageous disposition have resulted in a cacophony of noises to confuse the nation.

“Through their propaganda machines they have launched an attack against her appointment but the reality is that they are afraid because she has always stood for a free and fair election and that is not in their dictionary.

“They know that their appointment to the INEC is another measure by the president to strengthen the institution in order to guarantee more free and credible elections in the future and they do not like that,” said Jonathan.

Jonathan said that none of those who opposed his nomination had presented anything tangible against him, except that he worked for the government.

“But the question we must ask ourselves is this: Isn’t the government in which she serves the government of Nigeria? Do you have the brainpower to do the job?

“What denies you the right, like any other Nigerian, to take responsibility in any capacity?

“Are those who have been appointed in the past and those who currently serve more Nigerians than her?

“Have you committed a crime for which the constitution should disapprove your appointment?” the group asked.

Jonathan also cited examples of previous INEC presidents who were card-carrying members of previous administrations.

Also speaking, group member Dr. Tom Ohikere said Nigerians should be happy with Onochie’s nomination as “she is a professional, upright and reputable.”

Ohikere described his appointment as “well deserved” as he has the qualifications to propel Nigeria through a free and fair electoral process.

Ms. Sally Chinedu, former APC Southeast Zone Leader, also praised Onochie’s nomination, saying it “is part of the president’s agenda for the inclusion of women in governance.”

She described Onochie as a God-fearing woman whose character in previous positions, professionalism, and moral standards qualified her for the position. (YAYA)
