Forget about the headphone jack: Apple is looking to get rid of all the ports on its future iPhones.
That’s the prediction of a well-known Apple filter, which says that after this fall’s iPhone 12, the tech giant from Cupertino, California will make the switch to all-cordless phones.
At least one iPhone model in 2021 will have a smart connector instead of the device’s traditional lighting port, making any accessories that make use of the port obsolete. The smart connector would fit into the device like a magnet instead of having to fit into it.
The prediction is in line with a previous report by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said he expects the iPhone 13 model to be a completely wireless device.
Meanwhile, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 2020 will keep the lightning port despite the company experimenting with prototypes of the phone with the most widely used USB-C data and charging port.
The upcoming iPhones are rumored to have 5G hardware, allowing them to access a network that promises faster internet and faster response times than LTE.
Last month, reports emerged that Apple was slowing production growth for the new phones, as the coronavirus pandemic weakened global consumer demand and threw a wrench in its manufacturing operations in Asia.
Apple traditionally needs to send engineers back and forth from its offices to its factories in China to finalize designs in the lead-up to the product launch. But the coronavirus has led Apple to restrict employee travel to the outbreaks of the disease, including China.
