Aregbesola: I will not resign due to the jailbreak

Interior Minister Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said on Wednesday that he will not resign despite calls, following frequent jail breaks across the country over the past year.Aregbesola, whose ministry oversees the Nigerian Correctional Service across the country, spoke to journalists at the end of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the State House, Abuja, stated that calls in some sectors they were not necessary for his resignation.

“As for whether he requires my resignation, I still don’t see the need to do so because it is not for lack of preparation that the attacks were successful,” Aregbesola said.

The minister, however, assured that the government was making efforts to increase security around correctional facilities, especially after the escapes in Owerri, Oyo, Kabba and Jos in recent months.

“What I can assure Nigerians is this. Yes, however contextual these attacks are and the successes these criminals are having, we are improving our game and will prevent any opportunistic attack of this type and even make it impossible. And that is what the state must do.

“We are working with all branches of government, particularly security to make our custody facilities impregnable. We will not rest until we achieve it. That is the guarantee I want to give Nigerians. ”
