Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has joined Hertha Berlin from the Bundesliga on loan for one season.

The French Under-21 international showed plenty of promise by joining the Lorient Gunners in 2018, but Mikel Arteta has not been impressed by his attitude and application. His appearance from the bench against Liverpool last week was his first appearance in a one-game team since the 2-1 June loss to Brighton.

The return of Mohamed Elneny has pushed him down the pecking order and he is now heading to Germany for the 2020/21 season in search of reliving his stagnant career.

Guendouzi told Hertha’s website: “The discussions with those responsible convinced me. I not only want to develop personally, but to help the entire association take the next step. “

Managing Director Michael Preetz added: “With Mattéo we got a player who, despite his young age, with his experience of almost 60 Premier League matches, makes our midfield even more flexible. It brings aspects that improve our game even more ”.

He will replace Marko Grujic in Berlin after Hertha failed to secure the return of the Liverpool midfielder for the third consecutive season.

Hertha are currently 13th in the Bundesliga after three matches, earning a 4-1 win at Werder Bremen before losing to Eintracht Frankfurt and champion Bayern Munich. They finished 10th in the league last season.

Guendouzi has made 82 appearances for Arsenal, despite just turning 21 in April. He impressed on spells with former coach Unai Emery, but has been frequently absent from Arsenal’s teams of the day since losing at Brighton last season.
