Gunmen suspected of being bandits on Thursday rampaged through the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), torching two tractors and kidnapping no fewer than 22 farmers.

The incident occurred in the Rafin-Daji community in the Gurdi district of the Abaji Area Council of Abuja.

A farmer who escaped kidnapping told reporters that the incident occurred around 2:00 pm on Thursday, when bandits armed with AK-47 rifles attacked farmers who were cultivating their land in the Rafin-Daji community, that shares a border with a community in the state of Niger. .

According to him, 13 people from the same family were among the 22 kidnapped.
Gurdi Chief District Chief Alhaji Bala Mohammed confirmed the kidnapping of the farmers and the burning of tractors, but said he had not yet determined the number of people kidnapped.

The district chief, who lamented that his village was under siege as bandits usually invaded his community across Niger state, said he had reported the latest kidnapping incident to the police and Abaji Area Council authorities. .

Interim FCT Police spokesman Omotayo Williams confirmed the incident.

“It happened in Rafin Daji, a border community between Niger and the FCT. The farmers were working on their farmland when the armed men outnumbered them and kidnapped them.
