Big spenders Chelsea and Man Utd have ‘head start’ on Spurs: Conte

Antonio Conte fears that the massive spending by Chelsea and Manchester United has given them a “huge advantage” over Tottenham in the fight for the top four places in the Premier League.

Conte got his wish from chairman Daniel Levy when Tottenham signed seven players during the transfer window, including £50m ($57m) striker Richarlison from Everton.

With a strengthened squad, Tottenham have made an undefeated start after five games.

But Conte is still worried after Chelsea and United each spent more than £200m on new signings.

The Tottenham boss believes the influx of expensive talent at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford could tip the scales in the top four race.

Speaking before Saturday’s game against Fulham, Conte told reporters: “Honestly, if you sign a player for £100m or £80m on the last day, you have a huge advantage because it means you’re signing a top-tier player. .

“I want to be very clear. I think we did what we could do and at the right time because the vision was very clear about the money to spend, to the point of getting players on free or loan because then we spent money on two players, Richarlison and then (Yves) Bissouma. .

“The others were on loan or free, but surely they had to have vision and anticipate and give the coach the opportunity to work from the beginning.

“We didn’t wait until the last day for a player to come on loan or to sign a player with characteristics that are not good for our team.

“We are on the right track due to the club’s ability to invest money at this time. So we have to be realistic to understand that there are different clubs. Clubs that can invest a lot of money, other clubs that can invest normal money.

“We did the right things, but if anyone thinks we’ve completed the situation, we’re a long way from this.”
