By innocent Anaba

Lawyers in the country have elected Mr. Olumide Akpata as the next president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

The announcement was made at 11:56 a.m. on Friday by the president of the NBA Electoral Committee, Taiwo Taiwo (SAN). Akpata won the election with more than 50 percent of the total votes cast.

His rivals for the office of NBA president were Deacon Dele Adesina (SAN) and Dr. Babatunde Ajibade (SAN).

Other winners are Mr. John Martin for the first Vice President of the NBA; Second Vice President, Mr. Adeyemo Kazeem; Secretary General, Mrs. Joyce Oduah; Assistant Secretary, Uchenna Nwadialo; Mr. Olukunle Edun, Secretary of Welfare; Dr. Rapulu Nduka, Advertising Secretary and Assistant Advertising Secretary, Mr. Naza Afam.

Olumide Akpata is a Senior Partner and Head of the Corporate and Business Practice Group at the Templars Law Firm.

Akpata had told him that he would be a practical NBA president, if elected, and would focus on the welfare of young attorneys.

He had said: “If I am president, I will develop policies that will significantly improve the well-being and well-being of young attorneys and attorneys in general.

“Well-being-related issues in terms of better pay, health insurance, protection from sexual harassment and other forms of harassment in the workplace, and access to finance for those seeking to establish their own practices will be prime issues. line for me. “

Meanwhile, Adesina has asked for the exercise to be canceled, describing it as “a sham”.

His campaign group, the Adesina Support Group, DASAN, also expressed dissatisfaction with the electoral process.

In the petition addressed to Taiwo Taiwo, Adesina stated that the process was marred by excessive voting, the deprivation of rights of some eligible voters and the non-compliance with the provisions of the NBA Constitution.

One of its grouses is that the list of verified voters was only published about five hours before the start of the vote, contrary to the provisions of the NBA Constitution (2015), as amended.

He noted that the constitution provided for the list to be published no later than 28 days before the election.
