The Presidency has reacted to calls from some socio-ethnic individuals and groups calling for the immediate restructuring of Nigeria, saying that the Buhari administration will not succumb to undue threats and pressure on the matter.

Malam Garba Shehu, the president’s senior special assistant on media and publicity, said this in a statement Monday morning as he responded to renewed turmoil in some quarters over the country’s restructuring.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the leadership of some sociocultural groups, including Ohaneze Ndigbo and Afenifere, as well as the agitators, governors and clerics of the Niger Delta have reiterated the call for the restructuring of Nigeria.

According to them, the country needs its own constitution that marks the beginning of new political and economic arrangements based on regional structures or “the country will disintegrate.”

The presidential aide, however, dismissed the recurring threats as unpatriotic outbursts and said the Buhari administration would not make any decisions against the interests of 200 million Nigerians.

The statement read in part: “The Presidency responds to recurring threats to the country’s corporate existence with factions that give specific deadlines for the President to do one thing or another or, in their language,” the nation will disintegrate. “

This is to warn that these unpatriotic outbursts are futile and unjustified, as this government will not succumb to threats and will not make any pressure decisions at a time when the nation’s full attention is needed to address security challenges. facing at a time of the Covid-19 health crisis.

I repeat: this administration will not make any decisions against the interests of 200 million Nigerians, who are the first responsibility of the president according to the constitution, out of fear or threats, especially in this hour of health crisis.

“The president as leader-elect under this constitution will continue to work with patriotic Nigerians, through and in line with parliamentary processes to find solutions to structural and other impediments to the growth and well-being of the nation and its people.”

The General Overseer, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had warned the Federal Government to give Nigeria a lasting solution to the secession turmoil and its economic challenges by restructuring the country as soon as possible to prevent a possible breakup.

Equally, governors of the 36 states of the country They have called for the return of more powers to the states with adequate funds to satisfy the longings of the citizenry, warning that the current structure is unsustainable and could cause calamities if it is not reorganized.
