The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday rebuked the government led by President Muhammadu Buhari for what it called its “manifest lack of commitment and proactivity” to control the onslaught of the second wave of COVID-19 and the deaths that accompany it in the whole country.
The party, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, said it was “unforgivable that the lives of our compatriots are increasingly in danger as citizens,” including the deaths of prominent Nigerians, are announced daily as a result of the COVID-19, while the Buhari administration has remained dormant without any concrete commitment to a solution. “
The statement further read: “The PDP is dismayed that the Buhari administration has not made any budgetary provision in the 2021 allocation for the procurement of essential therapies, including vaccines, even in the face of growing anxiety about the second wave of the pandemic in our nation.
“In fact, it is the height of leadership failure that the federal government has been unable to make a decision on the type and quantity of vaccines expected, as well as the associated ancillary facilities and logistics.
“However, the PDP is not surprised by such indolence and confusion in governance, as the current system under the supervision of President Muhammadu Buhari is riddled with endemic corruption, mediocrity, incompetence and a laissez-faire attitude towards issues involving with the welfare of Nigerians.

“It is on record that the lethargic attitude, for which the Buhari administration has come forward, also encouraged the diversion of funds and COVID-19 palliatives aimed at cushioning the effect of the pandemic, leaving Nigerians to survive the last horrendous situation -help.
“More worrying is that the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 has not demonstrated any capacity beyond the mere announcement of numbers of infected people, deaths, recoveries, discharges and problems of local protocols instead of participating in epidemiology, research and production of equipment, drugs, therapeutic products and other medical palliative that can help avoid the impact of the global pandemic.
“For this reason, the PDP reaffirms our demands for the dissolution of the PTF and instead allows a convergence of experts in a special department under the jurisdiction of the National Center for Disease Control, NCDC, to professionally face the pandemic.
“Furthermore, our party rejects the use of the pandemic as a drainpipe for corruption for the All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders and their cronies in government circles.
“Furthermore, instead of allowing the Minister of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs to take packages of cash to the streets, under the guise of mitigation measures, as was recorded during the first wave, the PDP demands that the federal government channel these resources directly to the respective state governments to cushion the possible effects of the pandemic on the population ”.
