Eating Onions can improve your eyesight: There is a widespread misconception that onions can assist improve one’s eyesight, and on more than one occasion, I have gotten into debates with other people about whether or not this is actually true.

Since I do not consume onions, at least not the sliced variety, and my eyesight has never been better, I have always been of the opinion that eating or not eating onions has nothing to do with one’s ability to see clearly. As I was conducting research for today’s FACT 101, I came to the conclusion that onions do, in fact, aid in the improvement of one’s eyesight.

“What some people don’t know is that onions are loaded with sulfur which is used by the body for making the lens stronger and more durable. Hence, the chance of damage to the eyesight is minimized,” says Health Me Up.

One of the reasons why onions are so beneficial to your eyes is because they contain sulphur.

“Sulphur-rich garlic and onions are important for the production of glutathione, an important sulphur containing protein that acts as an antioxidant for the lens of the eye. Raising glutathione levels can be instrumental in both prevention and resolution of visual problems like macular degeneration, glaucoma or cataracts,” the Huffington Post wrote in one of its articles.

Also, Dr. Maoshing Ni explains, “Foods rich in sulfur, cysteine, and lecithin help protect the lens of your eye from cataract formation. Excellent choices include garlic, onions, shallots, and capers.”

Because the foods we put into our bodies can have both positive and bad effects on our general health, it may be a good idea to take a mindful look at the makeup of our meals. Our bodies are dependent on the vitamins and other nutritional nutrients that are present in the foods that we eat. There is no difference between the eyes and any of the other organs in your body. The greatest way to improve your eyesight is through the foods that you eat, and juicy onions are one of such foods. Although there are many ways to enhance your eye health, the best way to improve your eyesight is via the foods that you eat. A publication that focuses on health and wellness online agrees with this recommendation.

“Eating raw onions, garlic and soy will help prevent the formation of cataracts and improve the lens health of your eyes. Furthermore, these foods are naturally anti-inflammatory, so they help reduce inflammation throughout the body, including any inflammation in and around the eyes that might cause problems,” it said.

Quercetin, an antioxidant that is believed to prevent cataracts, is found in red onions, which can help you prevent bad eyesight. Red onions in particular contain this antioxidant. If you are someone who, like me, has been trying to avoid eating onions, eHow has some advise for you.

“Incorporate garlic, onions, shallots and can capers, which contain sulfur that the body uses to produce glutathione, an antioxidant that benefits the lens of the eye. Garlic and onions also help maintain circulatory health, which benefits the eyes.”
