Career

The Nigerian clubs Federation Works and Iwuayanwu Nationale were responsible for Kanu Nwankwo’s early development as a footballer (now Heartland FC). These clubs helped him earn a spot on the Nigerian national team for the 1993 U17 World Cup, where he finished tied for first place in the scoring race with five (5) goals.

The success that Kanu had at the U17 World Cup drew the attention of Ajax, which resulted in the Dutch club paying €200,000 for his services in 1993. Kanu won the UEFA Champions League while playing for Ajax in 1995. That same year, he also won the UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Intercontinental Cup. In addition, between 1994 and 1996, he was undefeated in the Eredivisie, winning all three titles, before leaving the league in 1996.

Kanu had a brief stint at Inter Milan, during which it was discovered that he had a heart defect. As a result of the operation and the subsequent recovery period, Kanu was sidelined from playing football for approximately eight months. Kanu made the decision to leave Inter Milan for good in 1999, when he signed with Arsenal of the Premier League to play for Arsene Wenger. When Kanu was playing at the Highbury Stadium, he earned the nickname of a “super sub” because he frequently scored important goals after coming off the bench.

Kanu was a member of the Arsenal team that won the Premier League in 2002 and 2004, the English FA Cup in 2002 and 2003, and the FA Charity Shield in 1999. He also helped the team win the “Invincibles” title in the 2003–2004 season. Kanu played for West Bromwich Albion for two years after leaving Arsenal in 2004 and signing a free agent contract with the club. He spent those two years at The Hawthorns. His final major club was Portsmouth, where he remained for another six years until he retired in 2012. He hung up his boots in 2012.

Super Eagles Career

After leading Nigeria to victory at the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Kanu made his first appearance for the Super Eagles in a friendly match against Sweden in the year 1994. Although he did not win his next championship with the Super Eagles, he did win his next championship with the national team in 1996. He was the star player on the team that brought Africa its first Olympic gold medal in football at the Atlanta ’96 games.

After that point, Kanu’s career with the Super Eagles continued to be interesting, culminating in the country’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the year 2000. The former Arsenal forward represented the Super Eagles at the 1998 World Cup in France, the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
