The Federal Government has established a commission of inquiry to critically analyze the cause of death of Richard Gbadebo, the 300th level student from the University of Ibadan who died in a factory in the Oluyole area of ​​Ibadan on July 28, 2020.

A copy of the letter transmitting the information was made available and sent to the ABOPE Chambers of the human rights activist, Mr. Femi Aborisade.

He recalled that Aborisade, Managing Partner of ABOPE Chambers, acting on behalf of the family of the deceased, had written on August 24, 2020 to the Minister of Labor and Employment demanding the creation of a commission of inquiry into the death of Gbadebo.

The cameras, among others, had said: “We wrote this petition requesting a commission of inquiry into the horrific death of Richard Gbadebo while working inside the facilities of HENKEL NIGERIA LIMITED AND EXPAND GLOBAL INDUSTRIES LIMITED.

“This call for a commission of inquiry is based on article 11 (d) of Convention No. 155 of 1981 of the International Labor Organization on health and safety at work and articles 33 to 36 of the Labor Disputes Law” .

Acting on the basis of the letter, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment, in a letter entitled: “Re: Investigation of accident in the death of the late Richard Gbadebo in the course of work at the facilities of Expand Global Industries LTD (Henkel), Ibadan, Oyo Estado ”, said that the Federal Government had created the commission as demanded by ABOPE Chambers.

The letter that was signed by the Ministry’s Director of Occupational Safety and Health, Ms. Nneka Adogu, on behalf of the Minister read: “Your letter dated August 24, 2020 refers, please.

Sequel to your request for an investigation commission into the death of the late Richard Gbadebo, in a fatal accident that occurred at the aforementioned factory on July 28, 2020, and investigation of the accident by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health of the Federal Ministry. of Labor and Employment, Ibadan, the Honorable Minister of Labor and Employment has approved and created an investigation panel to investigate the death ”.

“Please note that as a consequence of the Honorable Minister’s directives, the Investigation Panel will conduct a more vigorous and robust investigation into the death of the victim on the factory premises. The date of the visit of the panel members will be communicated in due time ”.

Speaking about the letter, Aborisade said: “Through the letter, the Honorable Minister of Labor has created a commission of inquiry into the death of Richard Gbadebo in accordance with the letter from our Chambers of 8/24/2020, requesting the same.

“It is a step forward in the fight for a safe work environment in Nigeria. The creation of the commission of inquiry may be the first of its kind in the history of industrial relations in Nigeria ”.
