The Federal Government has entrusted the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA) to continue to be a positive force for transformation and excellence.

Senator George Akume, Minister for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs made the call at the formal opening ceremony of eight members of the NNMA Governing Board on Friday in Abuja.

Akume, who acknowledged the agency’s contribution, said it had made steady progress in terms of rewarding citizens excellently since its inception.

“In retrospect, I must proudly say that the NNMA has been able to record countless successes and has made significant progress in its determined efforts to make Nigeria stand out.

“I therefore entrust you to continue in that spirit as positive forces of transformation and an enlightenment agency for the country,” he said.

He expressed optimism that NNMA, with the caliber of people chosen as board members, would refuse to engage in any form of mediocrity, regardless of the challenges they face in the course of their operations.

“The infinite opportunities that the NNMA is seizing cannot be overemphasized.

“As newly appointed and re-elected members of the NNMA celebrating today, we sincerely hope that your productivity and integrity will shine through your tenure.

Earlier in his welcoming address, Mr. Festus Dauda, ​​Permanent Secretary of the ministry, instructed the board members to be patriotic in their services, while assuring them of the ministry’s commitment to assist them in any way.

In his response, Professor Shekarau Aku, Chairman of the Board, expressed his appreciation to the federal government and the ministry for carefully selecting them to direct the affairs of the agency.

According to him, the NNMA is an agency driven by Federal Government values ​​that has the responsibility of identifying, recognizing / rewarding citizens for their demonstrated ability to innovate and invent for the progress of the country and the world.

He said that the core value of the NNMA included the promotion of excellence in the academic system, intellectual honesty, transparency, accountability and due process, among others, hence the need for intelligibility in its functions.

Therefore, Aku promised that his administration would focus on implementing a corporate strategy to reposition the NNMA for greater operational effectiveness and continued relevance to Nigerian society at large.

“I have no doubt in my mind of the expectations of my colleagues, family and friends, as well as my supporters, as I once again assume this exalted position as President of the NNMA.

“This is particularly so when we strive to do with all vigor and sincerity of purpose, the task of rewarding excellence in all areas of life,” he said. (YAYA)
