The Federal Government says it will close the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna train services if there are any cases of COVID-19 among the passengers.
The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, stated this yesterday while participating in the NTA Good Morning Nigeria program.
He said train users must adhere to all COVID-19 protocols from the beginning of each journey to the end.
The minister said: “If we see that we are transporting passengers who have Covid-19 from Lagos to Ibadan and Ibadan to Lagos, we will stop it just as we threaten to stop the one from Kaduna to Abuja if people do not comply with COVID-19 protocols.
“Don’t forget that in Kaduna-Abuja we transport 4,000 passengers in one day. Imagine that roughly 20 percent have Covid-19, they can transmit COVID-19 to all passengers.
“The transmission rate will be high. The same applies to Lagos. Everyone must comply with the COVID-19 protocols, wear their masks until the end of the trip.”
The minister also added that the $ 1.6 billion Lagos-Ibadan rail project, to be completed this month, would be virtually inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation had started operations on the Lagos-Ibadan railway in December 2020, a standard gauge railway covering a distance of 156 km.
