Google will keep its employees working from home for at least another full year.
Personnel from the search giant that was first sent home in March due to the coronavirus pandemic are not expected to return in large capacity until at least July 2021, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The decision strikes most of Google’s 200,000 employees worldwide and is partly fueled by uncertainty regarding the upcoming school year.
According to reports, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai “was influenced in part by employees’ sympathy with families for planning uncertain school years that may involve instruction at home, depending on geography.”
Google had previously told employees to prepare to work from home until the end of 2020, with a tentatively scheduled return to the office for January.
The Mountain View, California-based company said in May that employees who work from home will be able to spend up to $ 1,000 on home office needs, such as standing desks and ergonomic chairs.
Silicon Valley tech titans have pointed out that working from home may be the new norm in the future. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey previously said he anticipates some employees deciding to give up daily office trips forever, while Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg said half of the social media giant’s employees They could be working remotely in the next five to 10 years.
Alphabet’s shares rose 0.8 percent in trading Monday morning.
