“A policeman killed by unknown gunmen. One of the thugs was also neutralized,” Anyawu, the police superintendent, said in a text message in response to inquiries about the incident.

increase in attacks

Like other states in south-eastern Nigeria, security has recently deteriorated in Ebonyi state with frequent attacks by gunmen.

The latest incident comes about a week after suspected arsonists torched a local office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Iboko, a community in the state’s Izzi Local Government Area.

The Nigerian government has accused Biafran Indigenous People (IPOB) of being responsible for deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attacks.

The separatist group is leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra that it wants to separate from the southeast and some parts of south-south Nigeria.
