Two policemen were killed on Sunday when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Enugu Statesoutheast Nigeria.
The gunmen, upon arrival, were said to have opened fire on the officers manning the checkpoint, killing two of them on the spot.
The incident occurred at around 11:27 am along Kenyatta Road, near the main gate of the University of Nigeria, Enugu campus in the Enugu North local government area of the state.
A witness, who gave her name simply as Mama Chinedu, told PREMIUM TIMES that she and other shop owners escaped during the attack.
“Two policemen were killed by the gunmen. But two other officers escaped with gunshot wounds,” he said.
“We ran away because the bullets were flying around here.”
A video clip, apparently recorded shortly after the attack, has been circulating on various WhatsApp groups.
In the clip, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, two bodies of the slain officers were seen in the area.
While one body lay along the road, the second body was seen inside a ditch near the scene of the attack.
Passers-by were also seen gathering around the bodies.

Enugu state police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe did not respond to calls or a WhatsApp message seeking comment on the attack.

Enugu, like other states in south-eastern Nigeria, has seen a spike in deadly attacks of late.
The attacks, mostly targeting security officials and government facilities, have been blamed on the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), who are fighting for sovereign status for the Igbo-speaking people in the southeast.
IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu is being held in Abuja where he is on trial for terrorism.
