The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the murder of Mr. Freedom Odiete, President of the Udu Port Market in the Delta State Udu council area.

Delta state police public relations officer Onome Onowakpoyeya, who confirmed the market president’s assassination on a phone chart on Monday, said Odiete was killed Sunday by men believed to be hitmen.

Odiete, who was popularly known as Opito, was killed by armed thugs who assaulted him at the Cross-and-Stop junction near the Ekete Inland Junction along the DSC / Udu Highway in the Udu area of the state.

Opito, according to sources who witnessed the incident, was driving a Jeep Pathfinder when he was ambushed and shot in the left hand by his killers, following two unsuccessful death attempts last week.

The deceased who immediately jumped out of his Jeep was chased by gunmen up Orhuwhorun Road before being repeatedly shot by thugs.

It was concluded that the attack could be related to the crisis that shook the property of the Udu Habour market among the youth of the Ovwian and Owhase communities.

The findings revealed that both communities have been in dispute over who controls the market and the late president insisted that market leadership would not be divided along the community line.

“This is the third time armed men have pursued him. I was two posts away when I heard the gunshots raining in the air. When the shooting stopped, we ran out only to see that it was Opito (Freedom Odiete) who had been killed. He was attacked last week, but God, being so kind, survived.

“We learned that the Owhase and Ovwian communities have had problems with Udu Habour Market. He has been receiving threats from some people for the matter, ”a friend of the deceased told our correspondent.

It is also alleged that he was attacked last year.
