The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested eight suspected transvestites during a wedding in Kofar Waika, Gwale Local Government Area of the state.
This was contained in a statement issued to journalists by the junta’s deputy commander-general, Mujaheed Aminudeen-Abubakar, on Tuesday in Kano, the state capital.
According to the board, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off from good Samaritans that youths dressed in female Fulani attire were attending and dancing at a wedding.
“Our officials, upon receiving the information, went to the wedding ceremony venue and detained eight young men, including the groom, dressed in Fulani female attire, dancing to the music in their finery,” he said.
Aminudeen-Abubakar, according to the statement, said they confessed to the crime when they were arraigned before the Hisbah Shari’a Court in Kano.
The judge, Khadi Tanimu-Sani, ordered that each of them be given 10 cane lashes, pay N20,000 and lodge bail each or be remanded in a correctional center for three months.
The board, which was established in 2000, has the responsibility of enforcing what is correct and what is prohibited in Islamic customs and customs.
