The Federal Government of Nigeria, in its attempt to stop criminal activities, through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) ordered that all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) be linked to the National Identity Number (NIN) .
This is to allow government agencies and other accredited agencies to access anyone’s details from the national database when necessary.
New registration?
If you have never registered for the NIN, you will need to visit any nearest National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office. However, when visiting, be sure to adhere to all COVID-19 prevention protocols:
- Wear your masks
- Disinfect your hands
- Maintain social distancing. Stand at least 6 feet from the person closest to you, especially if you are in a queue
The failure of some Nigerians to adhere to this has caused the NIMC to close some of its centers.

How to recover your NIN
For those who have already registered and obtained their NIN but do not remember it, it is easy to recover.
- Dial * 346 # using the phone number you registered with
- To print another voucher, visit a NIMC office.
Nigerians in diaspora
The registration exercise does not exclude Nigerians from the diaspora. Those who wish to obtain their NIN must visit an accredited agent in their country of residence.
