The Defense Headquarters said troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade on Saturday foiled the attack by terrorists on the convoy of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway.
A statement by the Director of Defense Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said on Monday in Abuja that troops also recovered the two vehicles affected in the incident.
He said a military truck driver, four police escorts and a State Security Service (SSS) agent who were injured in the attack were in stable condition.
According to him, one of the injured police escorts died shortly after arriving at the Damaturu Specialist Hospital.
“Reinforcement troops of the 29 Brigade Task Force led by the Brigade Commander are conducting combat patrols in the area to locate the terrorists who carried out the dastardly act.
“The two vehicles affected in the incident, including a military MRAP and a civilian escort vehicle whose tires were shot during the incident, have been safely recovered at the Benisheikh military camp.
“Operations are underway to hunt down and destroy the terrorists who carried out the attack,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the governor’s convoy was ambushed by terrorists on Saturday while returning to Damaturu from Maiduguri, about 6 kilometers from Benesheikh town.
The governor was not in the convoy when it was ambushed.
The Secretary to the State Government and some other senior government officials who were in the convoy were unharmed.
