The Humboldt Research Scholarships 2023-2024 are fully funded scholarships for international students. These scholarships are only offered for post-doctoral studies. This scholarship includes a monthly scholarship of EUR 3,150 and additional financial support for accompanying family members and items.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation allows highly qualified foreign scientists and academics who are just beginning their academic careers and who completed their PhD less than four years ago to spend extended research periods (6 to 24 months) in Germany.

The research scheme is carried out in cooperation with academic hosts at research institutions in Germany. Applicants choose their own research topic and host in Germany. Details of the research outline, including information on the intended duration of the fellowship, must be agreed with the intended host prior to applying. Short-term visits for study and training purposes or to attend conferences are not eligible for sponsorship.

The Humboldt Research Fellowship will provide the following benefits:

  • A monthly scholarship of €2,670 for postdoctoral researchers (PhD completed in the last four years). A monthly scholarship of 3150 euro for postdoctoral researchers (PhD completed in the last 12 years).
  • A flexible start date and, for experienced researchers, the option to divide the scholarship into a maximum of three stays.
  • Individual tutoring during the sponsorship period.
  • Intensive German course for scholarship holders and their partners before the scholarship.
  • Additional financial support for the accompaniment of family members and elements such as travel expenses and full sponsorship of former students once the research stay is over, such as a Return Grant or additional stays in Germany.

Eligibility Criteria for the Humboldt Research Fellowship

To be eligible for the Humboldt Research Fellowship, Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Required language: english or german
  • Eligible countries: All the countries of the world
  • Doctorate or comparable academic degree (PhD, CSc or equivalent) obtained no more than four years.
  • Academic publications reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or publishers.
  • Confirmation that research facilities are available, mentorship agreement and detailed expert statement by an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
  • Peer reviews from the PhD supervisor and another academic qualified to give informed feedback on the applicant’s qualification, preferably including reviewers who do not work at the applicant’s own institute.
  • Necessary language skills: humanities or social sciences and medicine: German, otherwise a good knowledge of English; natural sciences and engineering: good knowledge of German or English.
  • The Humboldt Foundation assumes that the candidates will respect the Rules of Good Scientific Practice and legally binding principles of scientific ethics during the application and sponsorship periods.

How to apply for the Humboldt Research Grant?

Follow the instructions below to apply for the Humboldt Research Grant:

(1). You have to choose two hosts (whether people or institute) in Germany and ask them for a confirmation and review for the investigation.
Note: if you choose the institute to be your host, you must schedule the period of stay.

  • Curriculum vitae (two pages maximum).
  • Research outline (five pages maximum).
  • Complete list of publications.
  • List of selected key publications.
  • Key posts.
  • PhD certificate.
  • German language certificate, if applicable.
  • Host statement and confirmation of research facility.
  • Two expert opinions.
  • In addition, when necessary: ​​letter(s) of acceptance and/or acknowledgment(s) from the editors, as well as abstracts or translations of key publications.
