Former Delta state governor hopeful Chief Sunny Onuesoke said Tuesday that while the security situation in the country was pathetic and terrifying, there were better options available to enhance security rather than calling on the federal government to allow Nigerians carry arms to protect themselves due to the worsening security situation in the country.
Onuesoke, who was reacting to a statement of credit to the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, said; “Unfortunately, the security situation in the country is pathetic and very frightening because the government led by Buhari has not fulfilled its duty to protect the lives and property of the people.
“The fact that Nigerians can no longer sleep with both eyes closed shows how dire the situation is. I think there are better options available that can be employed to improve the situation. Professor Itse Sagay’s advice to the federal government is self-denial of the sad reality on the ground and an attempt to change the goal because he is in bed with the government of the day under whose supervision people are becoming a refugee in their country. .
“The government in power has continued to breach its obligation to fulfill its part of the social contract with the people”, arguing that “allowing people to take up arms as a means of protecting themselves can result in anarchy, doom and national disaster in a country like ours, where there is no proper database for a proper background check, a low level of awareness about mental assessment, and the unpredictable nature of Nigerians facing so many uncertainties due to the failure of the APC / Buhari-led government.
“With declining economic fortunes, hunger, and increasing uncertainty on the land, allowing Nigerians to carry weapons to defend themselves may be just the beginning of the end as this could lead to unnecessary bloodshed, retaliatory attacks, killings and killings because most people are angry and would be looking for every opportunity to let go, which can result in an even worse scenario like the one we had in America. “
However, he posited that restructuring and a declaration of a national security emergency was the way to go “if the government is sincere in its efforts to address the challenges of insecurity that currently threaten the very foundations of this country.
“The way forward is restructuring and modifying the country’s security architecture, improving wellness packages for our security personnel, heavily investing in modern security devices and equipment to boost security staff morale. in the fight against criminal activities and a national emergency declaration on security throughout the country ”.
