The national president of the Union of Academic Personnel of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, has promised that they will protect university autonomy with the last drop of blood.

Ogunyemi made this clear in a press release made available to journalists in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.

The statement was titled “On No IPPIS, No Salary of President Buhari” and Ogunyemi explained that the directive was intended for civil servants and not for university professors.

The president of ASUU revealed that on January 9, 2020 they reached an understanding with President Muhammadu Buhari, to develop the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), which will be sensitive to the operation of the university system, accommodate perculiarities and respect the autonomy.

Ogunyemi also claimed that ASUU has spent millions of naira to develop UTAS, which has been submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education.

“We are aware of the antics of the bureaucrats, especially in the Office of the General Accountant of the Federation, with the aim of putting the universities under their control. ASUU will not sit back and watch the progress we have made in the autonomy of Nigerian universities slip away.

“It took us several years of continuous fighting during the army to get here. So, let no one hide under the name of President Muhammadu Buhari to attack the autonomy of public universities because Nigerian academics are prepared to resist him to the last drop of blood, ”reads part of the statement.
