Gareth Southgate is hopeful that star forward Harry Kane will be in a position to start for England when they face Denmark in the Nations League on Wednesday.

Spurs head coach José Mourinho has asked Southgate not to use Kane in all three England games during the international break, as Tottenham got off to a congested start to the 2020-21 campaign.

Kane scored twice when Spurs dismantled Manchester United 6-1 in the Premier League on October 4, before presenting to England the same day.

However, the 27-year-old had a scan for a thigh problem and did not participate in a friendly match against Wales on Thursday, starting on the bench against Belgium on Sunday before replacing Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 66th minute. .

However, despite Mourinho’s concerns, England coach Southgate is confident that his captain will be able to start against the Danes on Wednesday.

“Well, from a medical point of view, there have been talks, because that would always be the case,” Southgate told reporters when asked if England had been in contact with the Spurs.

“He reported on Sunday, we gave the players who reported on Sunday, that they weren’t involved in the Wales game for us, we gave them two recovery days.”

“He started training on Wednesday, he was a little unhappy with how he was feeling, so then he worked with our medical team the next few days, we scanned just to be safe, but it’s a muscle fatigue issue rather than an injury so just I needed a little more confidence.

“I knew he could move on a bit by then, but he just needed a little more confidence, so his training week was really not adequate to start the game.

“I think he will have gained more confidence during the stage he had against Belgium, and if all goes well, we hope he is fine to start on Wednesday.

It’s not difficult to understand Mourinho’s concerns, given Spurs’ confidence in their star forward.

Kane made 29 league appearances last season, missing nine games in the top flight.

Of the games they missed, Tottenham won just three, scoring 12 goals in total, compared to 49 goals and 13 wins with Kane at the wing, while they already have three top flight goals and six assists to their name this season. .

Spurs’ next game in the Premier League will be on Sunday, when Mourinho’s men host London rivals West Ham.
