The Kano state government said Thursday it cannot prosecute House Majority Leader Alhassan Doguwabecause there was no evidence to do that.

State Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Musa Lawan told reporters that the government will drop the murder charge against the lawmaker. He said his office cannot substantiate the criminal conspiracy, fire damage and manslaughter charges filed against Doguwa.

Newslodge reported how the Kano police charged Mr. Doguwa with murder for allegedly killing three people during the February 25 election.

The lawmaker was allegedly involved in a violent confrontation between members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that led to the deaths of three people and the burning of an opposition party campaign office in Tudun. Wada local government.

On Friday, the police submitted a report of their investigation of the incident to the Kano State government for review and possible prosecution of Mr. Doguwa and 14 others.

The Kano government said it can only prosecute five suspects arrested along with Mr. Doguwa for alleged arson at the NNPP office in the Tudun Wada local government area after they confessed to the crime.

“Based on the contradictory witnesses received, those who charged were full of contradictions, while others exonerated him (Mr. Doguwa) according to the police investigation report submitted to the Kano State government.

“After scrutiny, we cannot establish a murder charge against Alhassan Ado Doguwa and other accomplices, including the policemen whose ammunition was intact after the incident.

“By law, if you have a contradiction in the evidence against a suspect, you can choose the one that exonerates him against those that have contradictions, this led us to the fact that we cannot accuse them in court.

“Only five suspects who confessed to burning the NNPP office will be charged,” Lawan said.

Mr. Lawan said that apart from the conflicting comments, there was no medical evidence to prove that Mr. Doguwa caused the deaths of the deceased.
