The Cross River State Police Command rescued an 81-year-old Monarch who was taken from his home in Ambo by Idang in the Calabar South local government area Monday night.

He learned that the Victim, HH (Muri) Chief Bassey Iyamba was kidnapped around 9:00 pm on Monday night before the swift intervention of the police and community youth that led to the rescue around 4:00 am this morning (Tuesday). .

Speaking with Police Commissioner Sikiru Akande, he said the incident has given them a platform to show that they can also react promptly and quickly during emergencies.

His words: “I want to thank God for helping us react quickly in rescuing the 81-year-old traditional ruler. Our response is an idea and the tip of the iceberg to the fact that we have begun to deliver on our promise to CrossRiverians.

“We are sending a message to the thugs and all the criminals who want to test our strength or will that we are not going to give in until they are completely expelled from the state.

“I want to thank the youth of the Puff Adder community, Operation Akpakwu, the Efut Division and most especially the Navy police who took the risk of securing the waterways by ensuring that the thugs did not escape down the waterways with their victim.

“Those who are desperate to cause trouble in Cross River must rest assured that we will pursue them no matter where they hide or how far they run by the grace of God,” Akande warned.

For his part, Chief (Muri) Bassey Iyamba, the victim who was rescued, said his kidnappers made him walk about 2 miles in the dead of night while taking him deep into streams.

Iyamba said: “Three men entered my compound posing as clients who came to buy chicken because we handle poultry without knowing that they came to kidnap me, although I obtained information that they wanted to kidnap me a month ago and I restricted my movement, not knowing that yet it was a goal.

“One of them came into my living room and started harassing me, abused my wife and my children while asking me to bring the money, I told him that I had no money in the house.

“They dragged me, hit my head and face before they managed to carry me quickly, then they took me to the creek, where I walked more than a mile before reaching our destination because they took me from one camp to another.

“I must congratulate the police and the young people of my community, they did a lot of work to ensure that my captors did not manage to carry me through the water to the other side of the stream, I am grateful that God used them to save my life.

“I am an 81-year-old man, those men would have killed me inside the stream if it were not for the timely intervention of the police because they escaped when they discovered that the police were following them and approaching them.

“They left me alone in the stream, and when I started screaming I realized that there was no one with me, that’s when the police rescued me this morning (Tuesday),” said Chief Iyamba.
