The Lagos State Environmental and Special Crimes Unit (Task Force) has seized 60 vehicles from drivers who commit various traffic offenses over the weekend.
The chair of the working group, SP Shola Jejeloye, said this in a statement signed by his Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday in Lagos.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the crimes included driving against traffic (one-way), driving in BRT lanes by unauthorized vehicle drivers, and causing road obstructions.
Jejeloye was quoted as saying that traffic violators were detained in different parts of the state for violating the Lagos State Transportation Sector Reform Act of 2018.
“It is concerning to see both private car owners and commercial bus drivers driving against traffic or causing obstructions to other road users across the state.
“Honestly, it is painful that with the high level of enlightenment campaigns and serious warnings from the government, motorists still violate traffic laws.
“They drive into traffic with complete indifference, unafraid of crushing innocent bystanders or causing a collision with oncoming vehicles.
“The agency will continue to improve enforcement of the law, which has been controlling impunity on our roads,” he said.
The President praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for donating additional operational vehicles to the task force for the exercise labeled “Anti One-Way” to further boost traffic control operations.
Jejeloye urged motorists to desist from driving against traffic and obey the various traffic signs that the government visibly displays on all roads in the city to avoid law enforcement.
