Barcelona captain Lionel Messi made history on Wednesday night with his team’s 3-2 La Liga victory over Athletic Club.

Barcelona defeated Athletic Club, thanks to a double from Lionel Messi and a goal from Pedri.

Inaki Williams and Iker Muniain scored for the host.

Messi’s double against Athletic Club means that the Argentine captain has become the first Barcelona player to score two goals in La Liga’s new San Mamés, according to Opta José.

The previous player to score two goals in an away league game for Barcelona against Athletic Club was Javier Saviola in April 2002 at the old San Mamés.

The victory over Athletic Club means that Barcelona is now in third place in the Premier League table with 31 points from 17 games

Messi now hopes to lead Ronald Koeman’s men to victory when they face Granada in their next La Liga game on Saturday.
