Senior Vice President/Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIPAzu Ishiekwene, won the columnist of the year award at the 30th Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) 2022, held in Lagos on Sunday.
Mr. Ishiekwene, affectionately called Azu, beat out Abimbola Adelakun and Tunde Odesola, both of PUNCH, to win the award in an entry hosted by Vanguard, which, among other media outlets in Nigeria and abroad, publishes the weekly column union of Azu.
The NMMA Board is chaired by advertising guru and former Lintas CEO Mr. Dele Adetiba. The award in this category is named after Alade Odunewu, one of Nigeria’s greatest pundits of all time. Odunewu was famous for his wit and clarity of language.
In a LEADERSHIP statement signed by managing editor Raliat Ahmed-Yusuf, the newspaper said: “The award once again showed a consistency in the quality of Azu’s public commentary that has hardly diminished over the years.”
Azu, who has won this NMMA award at least four times in the past in his career of three and a half decades, won his first award in journalism 34 years ago when he won the Babatunde José Award for Best Printing Graduate Student. from the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos.
He is one of the most syndicated columnists in Nigeria and is also published on platforms in Ghana, Argentina, South Africa, Europe and the US.
