The Benue Police Command on Sunday said a middle-aged man, simply identified as Nicodemus, set himself and his girlfriend on fire in Makurdi.

The command spokeswoman, DSP Catherine Anene, told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Makurdi that Nicodemus was killed on the spot, while the girlfriend, also identified as Shiminenge, later died at the Benue State Teaching Hospital. , Makurdi.

Anene explained that Nicodemus committed the act at his girlfriend’s residence on Inkipi Street, Makurdi’s high-level area on Saturday night.

He said that an argument had taken place between them, adding, however, that the cause of the argument was unknown.

He said that Nicodemus had locked himself and the lady in his room before setting the room on fire.

“According to an eyewitness, there was an argument between them that we have not yet discovered.

“We understand that Nicodemus, while coming to Shiminenge’s house, came with fuel.

“He used the fuel to set himself and the lady on fire after locking the house from the inside,” the police spokesman said.

A Shiminenge neighbor told the NAN correspondent that Nicodemus had abandoned his wife and children for the lady and that the problem occurred when the lady told him about her plan to marry someone else.

Nicodemus was not happy with the lady for her decision to leave him for another man.

“He had previously abandoned his wife and children for Shiminenge. Then, he could not bear the disappointment, “the neighbor, who preferred anonymity.”
