Lionel Messi had a long phone call with José Mourinho about a move to Chelsea in 2004, Di Marzio reports.

The Argentine superstar was looking forward to working with Mourinho shortly after joining the Blues from FC Porto.

The Portuguese coach had won the Champions League with Porto the previous season.

Messi was just 16 when Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge at the time, and he turned 17 later that month.

It is believed that it was the first time that he tried to leave Barcelona.

During this summer, Messi also expressed his desire to leave the Camp Nou.

The 33-year-old whose contract expires in June 2021 finally took a 180-degree turn and stuck with the LaLiga giants.
