A Benin High Court jailed a mother and her two children on Monday for trafficking a 19-year-old girl to Russia for sexual exploitation.

The woman, Helen Ehioze, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while her son, Endurance Ehiozee, 37, and her daughter, Vivian Ehiozee, 31, were sentenced to 14 years each, with no option of a fine.

The case against the trio began in 2017.

The presiding judge, Magistrate Geraldine Imadegbelo, declared the convicted persons guilty of contravening articles 15 and 16 of the 2003 law on trafficking in persons.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the victim (name withheld), who is now 27 years old, was trafficked to Russia in 2012 by the trio when he was only 19 years old.

The Prosecutor, Mrs. Rosemary Emodogo, accused the convicts of contravening the articles of the 2003 law, amended in 2005, which prohibits trafficking in persons for the purpose of prostitution.

Shortly before being sentenced, the convicts’ attorney, Mr. J. Omigie, requested a lenient sentence, noting that they were the first offenders and had no criminal record.
