Synergy with the military will spell doom for drug cartels, says Marwa

To strengthen efforts to combat drug trafficking in Nigerian waters, the Nigerian Navy yesterday handed over two epenal boats, operational and training equipment to the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The event, which took place at the Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos, aimed to improve the operational efficiency and capacity of the agency’s maritime unit.

Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, who was represented by Western Naval Command Chief of Staff Hamza Kaoje, said the move was to build a closer relationship with the agency, as the Navy also held two-day trainings for NDLEA staff. in the management of vessels in a situation of maritime crime.

He highlighted that in October 2021, the NN intercepted a shipment of 32.9 kg of cocaine aboard the MV CHAYANEE NAREE with the collaboration of Interpol and NDLEA and that on April 19, 2022, the patrol boat from the Forward Operating Base BADAGRY intercepted and seized 40 bags of cannabis. on the shore of Ajulo, which was handed over to NDLEA for destruction, adding that this donation would renew collaborative efforts to tackle maritime crime.

MEANWHILE, NDLEA President/CEO, Brig. General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retired), said the ongoing synergy between the agency and other stakeholders, especially the armed forces, will further tighten control over drug cartels and spell the end of their activities in the country.

Marwa, who was represented by the Director of Sea Ports Operations, Ms. Omolade Foboyede, described the gesture as symbolic and the beginning of an era of stronger ties between both institutions.

“The agency is determined to cripple drug cartel activities on all fronts. We have no doubt that the combination of naval and narcotics strategies will spell doom for the drug lords in the coming days. NDLEA will continue to partner with relevant stakeholders as we tighten the noose on drug offenders,” he said.
