To improve data collection and analysis on port activities, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja on Tuesday.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Yemi Kale, General Statistician of the Federation, while NPA Managing Director Hadiza Usman signed by the Authority.

Speaking shortly after the agreement was signed, the head of NBS said that ports were the main channels through which cargo entered and left the country and that they were essential for the development of the transport and storage sector of the economy.

He also said that with the recent signing of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the prospects for increased trading and warehousing activities were huge and expected to grow significantly in the coming years, despite the COVID pandemic. -19.

Her words: “Therefore, generating and disseminating more granular information on these activities will be helpful in ensuring that policy makers and sector managers are fully equipped with the right tools and evidence to do their jobs.

“In addition, it will provide a solid foundation for operators and potential investors in the sector to make informed decisions about how to participate and take advantage of the opportunities available in the sector.

“The result of this effort will contribute to the growing variety of statistics produced by the statistical system in Nigeria and will also shed more light on the important work it does in managing port activities in Nigeria.”

In his own comments, Usman said the collaboration would result in the development of an inter-agency link.

The NPA CEO explained that the memorandum of understanding would close identifiable gaps by assisting in streamlining the process of data sharing, collection, cleaning, analysis, storage, retrieval and dissemination.

For her, the NPA would also require the development of joint capacities in the age of data analysis and data management.

“In addition, the creation of a mechanism and verification of joint data to have feedback on the data and the production between the elements of collaboration between the two agencies.

“In addition, I would like to specifically request the collaboration of the automation of data collection.

“This is an area where we would really need automation support in our data collection, which would eliminate errors and also have live and updated information when needed.

“So I’d like to specifically request that area of support to guide the NPA in rolling out automation when it comes to data collection.”

He added that the NBS, through collaboration, would obtain up-to-date business information on port operations, noting that it would also update its specific data heads for port operations and expand the scope of maritime data to be collected.

According to her, this would ensure timely access to data sharing for planning, research, monitoring, forecasting reporting and a sustainable synergy for capacity building across the port industry.
