The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered the nation’s telecommunications companies to suspend the sale, registration and activation of the new subscriber identity module (popularly known as a SIM card).
This was noted in a press release from the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, on Wednesday.
Adinde stated that the instruction was in line with the directive of the Honorable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), to give the Commission time to embark on another audit of the Subscriber Registration Database.
Clarifying the reason for the order, NCC said; was “in line with the Federal Government’s desire to consolidate the achievement of the SIM Card registration exercise of September 2019.
“However, when absolutely necessary, the Commission may grant a written waiver after approval by the Federal Government.
NCC, however, cautioned that; “Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) should be aware that non-compliance with this directive will be affected by strict penalties, including the possibility of withdrawing the operating license.
“As the Minister previously ordered in January 2020, all citizens are urged to immediately obtain Digital Identification from the National Identity Management Commission and send it to Network Operators.”
