Hansi Flick was delighted to see Niklas Sule make a long-awaited comeback from injury when Bayern Munich prepared for the Champions League by beating Marseille in Friday’s friendly.

Germany defender Sule has not played since October after tearing a previous cruciate ligament, although he was one of the substitutes for DFB-Pokal’s final win over Bayer Leverkusen.

The center-back replaced Jerome Boateng just after the hour of a 1-0 victory over Marseille on the Bayern academy campus, where Serge Gnabry scored the game’s only goal.

Sule getting minutes is a timely boost for Flick as Bayern prepare to face Chelsea in the second leg of their last Champions League game on August 16, a draw in which they lead 3-0.

“We are all very happy. He [Sule] He worked hard to get back on the court, ”said Flick.

“He more than deserved to be back on the field.”

Benjamin Pavard had a metatarsal injury in training this week, and Flick said Bayern will continue to monitor when the French defender can return.

“First of all, we have to play against Chelsea, which I think will be relatively close,” added Flick when asked about Pavard.

“Anything that happens after that, we will worry when we have fully opened the door to the quarterfinals.”

The injury situation meant that Joshua Kimmich was playing as a right back against Marseille and Flick was happy with what he saw of Germany’s internationally gifted international.

“It was, of course, a change. Also back in midfield with Thiago [Alcantara], who was previously injured, “said Flick.

“He also worked hard in his spare time. Josh always gave impulses on the right side and closed his side defensively. I’m very happy with that too. “
