Nigerian filmmaker Funa Maduka named to the 2023 Sundance Film Festival jury


Nigerian filmmaker Funa Maduka has been named one of 16 award-giving jurors at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Maduka is the only Nigerian on the entire jury list.

The festival, which kicked off on Wednesday, will last until January 29. This year, the festival will take place in Utah, USA.

The award-winning filmmaker is one of three jurors for the World Cinema Drama Competition, along with ShozoIchiyama and Annemarie Jacir.

He is also a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and has a BA in

Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

The 16 jurors will award the prizes to feature films and short films, which will be announced on Friday, January 27.

Other 2023 jury members include Jeremy O. Harris, Eliza Hittman and Marlee.

Matlin for the USA Dramatic Competition

While W. Kamau Bell, Ramona Diaz and Carla Gutiérrez would be on the US Documentary Competition jury, Shozo Ichiyama.

In addition, Karim Amer, Petra Costa and Alexander Nanau are the judges of the World Cinema Documentary Competition;

Finally, Madeleine Olnek for the NEXT competition section and Destin Daniel Cretton, Marie-Louise Khondji and Deborah Stratman for the Short Film Program Competition.

Funa Maduka is the former Head of International Original Films at Netflix, where she worked with the world’s leading global and emerging filmmakers.

For six years, he was at the forefront of the company’s global expansion, managing the launch of the film offering in more than 100 countries.

The New York filmmaker also pioneered Netflix’s move into international film production, creating a development roster in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

His talents in film acquisitions brought Netflix its first film nominations at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

Previously, he worked at Participant Media, developing and managing campaigns for

film and television projects.

Ms. Maduka is credited with writing, producing and directing the first Nigerian film to have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
