Nigerian government closes train station after terror attack

PREMIUM TIMES reported on Saturday’s attack on the train station in Edo state.

The attackers, whom police described as ‘herdsmen’, fired sporadically before kidnapping an as-yet-unconfirmed number of passengers.

Some of the passengers also suffered gunshot wounds, police said in a statement on Sunday.

Nigerian Railways Corporation (NRC) announced the station’s closure in a brief message on Sunday.

“Public Announcement: This is to inform our general public, and especially our esteemed passengers, that Ekehen Station has been temporarily closed due to security concerns, until further notice,” he wrote.

In addition, the Ministry of Transportation, which oversees the NRC, condemned the attack.

“The federal government condemns the despicable and utterly barbaric kidnapping of passengers at Tom Ikimi railway station in Igueben Edo state,” the ministry’s director of Press and Public Relations Henshaw Ogubike wrote in a statement on Sunday.

“Citizens are assured that the security organizations are taking steps to rescue the kidnapped train passengers. The Nigerian Police are on the trail of the criminals and have been mobilized with a view to protecting the life and property of the remaining passengers. The Government is saddened by this unpleasant development and assures its prompt response to the unpleasant situation.”

He said that more details about the incident will be communicated later.

The Edo attack comes several months after terrorists attacked a Kaduna-bound train in northern Nigeria, killing some passengers and kidnapping dozens more.

Most of the hijacked passengers were released after the ransom was paid and the rest after the attackers reached an agreement with government negotiators.
