Nigerian journalist Yusuf Anka on Thursday won the Global Shining Light Award for 2023.
At an event in Gothenburg, Sweden, Mr. Anka’s documentary about the BBC Africa Eye was declared the best ensemble among more than 400 entries from more than 80 countries. The documentary was titled ‘The Bandit Leaders of Zamfara’.
However, Anka was unable to physically attend the event because the Swedish embassy in Nigeria denied her an entry visa, a BBC official at the event said.

The Global Shining Light Award is organized by the Global Investigative Journalism Network and the ceremony is part of the Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC) to be held in Gothenburg in 2023.
More than 2,000 investigative journalists from over 100 countries, including Nigeria, currently attend the GIJC.
