The Nigerian Skating Federation (NSF) has said more than 2,000 young people will take part in its first national championships scheduled for Abuja in November and December. He also announced that more than 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have registered for the different categories of the championship.
Addressing a media briefing on the championship at the weekend, NSF President Major General Abdullahi Maikano, who is also President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), said the championship, dubbed “ABUJA2023 “, will be held starting in November. December 30 to 3, 2023, within and around the MKO Abiola National Stadium.
Maikano said the 42.5 kilometer skate marathon will end on the airport road to the city gate in Abuja and the Federal Road Safety Commission and other security agencies will monitor the race.
“The winners of the National Skating Championships will represent the country at the World Championships to be held in Greece after the event.
“Our goal is to bring the Nigerian flag to the world skating stage and ensure that the sport becomes popular among the youth and children of the country,” he said.
He assured the participants of their safety and security, while revealing that the winners of all categories at the Abuja championship will receive awards, prizes and trophies.
Maikano, who said there will be medical support and an emergency ambulance available to participants, revealed that the federation’s technical team has set the age limit for the event at 17 years and above. He also said there are categories for children to demonstrate their skills in the championship.
He said: “All our previous events have contributed to the excitement and anticipation surrounding the first ever National Skating Championships, ABUJA2023.
“They serve as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the skating community in Nigeria and set the stage for what promises to be a historic and memorable competition.”
