Governor Godwin Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki, candidate for governor of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, has urged all eligible voters in the state to ensure they show up on Election Day to cast their votes.

The governor said that the low turnout of eligible voters on Election Day was responsible for the loss of political value of the Oredo Local Government Area.

Obaseki stated this while addressing a crowd of PPD supporters in Oredo’s 6th and 7th districts on Saturday in Benin.

According to him, the biggest challenge is that many of us did not go out to vote on election day.

“In this District 6 and District 7 we have almost 50,000 registered voters here, but we don’t have 15,000 on Election Day.

“So the opposition thinks that we have no power, they think that we have no political value, this has been the norm, so in this election I want us to change this narrative.

“Because he doesn’t go out to vote en masse on Election Day, they think he has no power. The opposition believes that they are political champions.

“They said I didn’t win my unit or my ward, but if all the eligible registered voters go out and vote, they won’t be able to say it.

“In this gubernatorial election on September 19, it is between me and the opposition. I want to prove them wrong that people are with me and my deputy, Philip Shaibu.

“In the same way that the opposition is treating me in Oredo, it is the same way that it is treating my deputy in Etsako.

“The infrastructure development on the ground is greater than what we had before, but one thing I know is that the slaughter will not return.

“One thing I know is that the collection of occupancy certificates will be kept with less than 24 hours without any harassment.

“No one will stop the training and prompt payment of teachers’ salaries.

“Our teachers are digital now, now they train our children with computers, unlike in the past.

“All of this that I promise to continue doing can only be updated by producing more votes.

“So, go from door to door, call your neighbors that there is a need to vote massively in this election,” he said.

Earlier, Edo South Representative Senator Matthew Urhoghide said it was tradition to re-elect any governor who had done well and that the people would renew their term.

Urhoghide said that no one could stop the reelection of Governor Obaseki, saying that the people are in his favor.

He said that the people of Oredo must take the election as a challenge by voting en masse for the PPD.
