Ohanaeze denounces the lack of interest of Southeast youth in police recruitment


The Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbohas expressed concern over the “indifferent attitude” displayed by Southeastern youths in the ongoing police recruitment exercise in Nigeria.

They said the Police Recruitment Board would open the application portal for six weeks, from October 15 to November 26.

The Police Service Commission (PSC), a week later, announced that it had received 288,266 applications for the recruitment of officers.

PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, revealed that 217,300 Nigerian youths had applied for general service positions, while another 70,676 applied for specialized cadres.

Ohanaeze reacts

In a statement on Monday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu said the “lack of interest of Igbo youths” in applying for recruitment was “disturbing”.

Iwuanyanwu said it is worrying that Igbo youths were not interested in pursuing a career in the Nigerian security forces, unlike their counterparts in the northern part of the country.

“I have noted with dismay the indifferent attitude shown by the youths of South East Nigeria towards the ongoing recruitment exercise for general duty officers of the Nigeria Police,” he said in the statement.

“The lack of interest among Igbo youths towards the Nigerian Police is disturbing because only by enlisting in the police does one offer the unique chance of becoming a senior police officer in the future,” Mr Iwuanyanwu said.

The Igbo leader called on South East governors, traditional rulers, various Ohaneze leaders in the South East states, city union presidents and religious leaders in the region to use their various structures to “raise awareness among Igbo youth to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the current crisis. recruitment exercise.
